VITCOS to MACHUPICCHU

You are here:

Overview

The Cordillera de Vilcabamba was one of the last refuges of the Incas. Driven out by the Spaniards, they were forced to take refuge in remote and difficult to access regions, partly dominated by the presence of native communities such as the Asháninkas and the Matsiguengas. The Cordillera de Vilcabamba combines, in a single region, the majesty of the Andean glaciers with mountains covered with jungle, the “cejas de selva”, also called the Yungas (forests under the clouds). There are also deep rivers, rugged valleys and exceptional flora and fauna.

We will follow during our journey an ancient Inca path connecting Vitcos to the surroundings of Machu Picchu. The variety of landscapes encountered along the route is amazing. We will leave the temperate valleys at the start of the trek to join the ice of the Pumasillo massif (5,991 m), in the northern part of the Vilcabamba mountain range, then switch to the tropical slope before joining the valley of the Urubamba river. Each day will be the occasion for new atmospheres, the final highlight of which will be the visit of the essential site of Machu Picchu.
