Overview
In Quechua language, Choquequirao or Choquekiraw means “Cradle of Gold”. It is another “Lost City of the Inkas” “Choquequirao is the archaeological which demonstrates the inspiring of Inca ceremonial center.
A city dedicated the adoration of the “Pachamama” the Andean mother Earth “the Apus” Mountain gods and divinities like the water and the elements of Nature.”
Now our focus in this Area is the Andean people, who are living in these amazing mountains, with ancestral traditions, the Inca’s descendants.
Also the nature in the Vilcabamba mountains is amazing, we are going to cross all the Vilcabamba mountains ( Inka ́s kingdom ) from the Apurimac to Urubamba river, visiting the most important cities of the Inkas, walking on the Inka trail of Qelqamachay to Huancacalle, with the Andean culture. More than a challenge, to make the Choquequirao to Machupicchu trail is an experience of life.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Cusco city – Cachora Andean Community – Rosalina camping:
From Abancay at 5:00 am we pick you up from your hotel, then we travel in our private transport to Cachora for 4 hours approximately, with spectacular views in the way to Cachora (Apurimac Region) This is where we will meet our muleteer and horses, there we pack all our equipment in
mules. We begin to walk, through the high pass of Capuliyoc, from there, we will have a great view of the Apurimac canyon on the first view of Choquequirao. Then we will descend to playa Rosalina on the banks of the Apurimac River, Campsite at 1,550 masl. Or 5,115 Ft.
Day 2 : Rosalina camping – Choquequirao archaeological site:
Early in the morning from the Apurimac river, we will hike to Maranpata, a long and narrow trail, the view of the canyon is spectacular, it is also possible to see Andean Condors soaring in the Mountains.
After, we will arrive to the camp site of Choquequirao (3050 masl. 11,055 ft.).
Day 3: Choquequirao archaeological site:
We will enjoy all the day into the Choquequirao Archeological site.
This is important, because Choquequirao is 30 % bigger than MachuPicchu, also in this area it is perfect for Birdwatching.
Day 4: Choquequirao archaeological site – Maizal Andean families:
From the arqueological site of Choquequirao we start up to the high pass of Choquequirao 3500m.aprox. From then we descent to the Rio Blanco creek where changes all the Panorama. From the river we start to hike again to the camp site of Maizal, (Sacca family) where is a amazing views from his Andean house.
Day 5: Maizal Andean families – Yanama Andean community:
Walking on the Inka Trail, we cross the second highest pass, around 4470 m.s.n.m the entrance to the Andean Town of Yanama, we will observe different species of birds in all the way, also the impresive mountain range of Vilcabamba. We will camp with the Family of Mister Alejandro (horseman) our partner in the Adventure.
Day 6: Yanama community – Qelqmachay Inka trail:
We hike into the Mountains and descend to the Yanama river, later we go up to a little high pass (3500 m ) in this part we go inside the Qelqamachay creek, This is the part where we go to find the Inka trail, following this amazing trail we go to Arrive to Inkamachay ( Inka ́s cave) here we go to rest in the impressive Mountains and rock towers of Qelqamachay.
Day 7: Qelqmachay Inka trail – Huancacalle Andean village – Santa Teresa town:
Our last day walking in the area of Vilcabamba, We follow the Inka trail to our last high pass (4780m) aprox. Of the Corihuayrachina pass, in the interesting Inka trail we go to find the bridges, Tambos (Andean Home) and steps than descent to the tropical valley, for arrive to Huancacalle town, where is finish our trail on the Vilcabamba Mountains.
Later we take a transporting to Santa Maria (2 Hours aprox.) where we go to rest.
The next day, we take a transporting to Santa Teresa and Cocalmayo in the Hot springs and, we do our last Camp Site.
Day 8: Santa Teresa town – MachuPicchu village:
We take a transport from Santa Teresa and we go with other transport to “Hidroelectrica”, were we start our last trail, we go walking belong the railroad around 3 hours (10 Km) for arrive to Aguas Calientes (MachuPicchu town). Accommodation in our Hotel and Rest.
Day 9: Machu Picchu archaeological site:
* You wil have many options to visit Machupicchu, I will help you to organize your visit.
I think is not necessary to have a guide here, but it is possible to organize a private guide for you, around 2 hours explaining the site, after this you can go for yourself and enjoy this amazing buildings of the Inkas.
*I will stay with you and help you and organize the way back to Ollantaytambo and Cusco.
